A Day In The Life Part Three: Adventure Days

Our days tend to start the same no matter what we are doing, depending on Will’s teaching schedule. But there is one day a week when Will isn’t teaching and on these days we do like to enjoy a lay in. There isn’t always something exciting planned and sometimes its nice just to have a day off doing nothing. That being said, we do also take advantage of having an entire day and set off early for an adventure.

Cities

It’s not often we go into cities as we are not really city folk and much prefer being out in nature, however we do enjoy visiting the capital city of each country we go to. We feel it not only gives an entirely different perspective of a country as a whole but can also be an exciting change. Doing a walking tour is essential for us, not only do we learn all the best places to go but we also learn so much more about the people and the culture. We only ever spend one day in a city, taking full advantage, which means these days can be long. There is always a rough plan as to where we would like to go and what we would like to see, on that list is always a walking tour. They are fountains of knowledge, not only of where to go and what to eat but also provide interesting history and facts about the city. We will stay late, often grabbing something cheap to eat and generally end up in a bar at the end of the night before heading home.

Hiking

We like to organise long hikes for our “days off” giving us plenty of time to enjoy the view. When I say a long hike that could mean anything from 3 to 6 hours, our longest ever being 9 hours. Never again! These hikes can vary from mountains, lakes to the seaside and we are always awed by what we see. Taking our lunch and a tea with us to enjoy at viewpoint is one of the best ways to really relax and take in a view. It forces you stop for longer and really look at whats in front of you. One of our favourite hikes, took us down into a valley and up the other side to Cueva de los Manos. We enjoyed this hike so much as it was so diverse. One moment your climbing down a dusty cliff side then next thing you know your down in a long flat valley with green tress and river. All before heading up the opposite of the valley to sea some amazing hand painting from thousands of years ago. This hike took us around 6 hours including a guided tour of the caves and paintings.

Culture and History

Anything old, ancient or forgotten is always at the top of our list. Ancient ruins, petroglyphs, abandoned castles, yes please! We have been to some truly indredible places, whether it be a natural phenomena like the eternal flames, ancient roman ruins or hand paintings from hunter gatherers. We want to see it all. One of my personal favourites will always be the ancient roman city of Hierapolis sitting above the natural wonder of Pamukkale. The thermal city is full of well-preserved Roman ruins and it is believed Cleopatra her self bathed in the healing waters.
