Merry Christmas 2025

Though we of course enjoy Christmas on the road, it has always been a very different experience. We very much enjoy one another’s company and find our own way to make it a special day. Christmas however does feel like a time to spend with friends and family so we are so fortunate that Will’s parents have flown all this way to spend it with us. Over the holiday season and into the New Year we will be living in style on a cruise ship, with destinations along the coast of Uruguay, Argentina, Isla Malvinas (Falkland Islands) and Chile.

Christmas in South America is not like Christmas in the UK,  It’s not what we’ve come to see on TV, through extravagant Christmas ads or in Movies. You wouldn’t really know it was Christmas unless you were in a major city. The streets aren’t lined with lights, the shops aren’t pushing deals, and there isn’t any Christmas music playing on repeat since October (thank God!). No, it’s much quieter here, much softer. It still holds a religious significance and hasn’t been commercialised like it has in so many other countries. It truly is a time for family, a time to be together. It’s certainly not what we’re used but it is special in its own way, with its quiet arrival and no fuss but none the less full of love.

Not only were we thrown by the lack of extravagance but its also very strange for christmas to arrive along with summer. It can be difficult to imagine roasting chest nuts on an open fire when you yourself are roasting under the sun! Given that, we did tend to find it a little more difficult to muster up the enthusiastic christmas spirit. So this year we treated ourselves and Solero to a little Christmas tree to remind ourselves of the festivities whilst we waited for Will’s parents to arrive and the holiday to begin.

It’s a gentle reminder to forget what the TV tells you what Christmas is and to remember what it’s really about. We hope you all enjoy a very special Christmas this year and savour every moment with your loved ones. Find the special in the ordinary, there is plenty of it this time of year. And yes I’m saying all this whilst enjoying an extravagant cruise but the one thing we have been looking forward to the most on our little holiday (other than daily showers) was spending it with family…. And the food if I’m being honest. But mostly family.

Merry Christmas from us!
